Philosophers and other humanities researchers are working with organizations including Google DeepMind and Anthropic on questions concerning reasoning, values, consciousness, and the social consequences of AI.

The development is striking because many of the questions now confronting AI researchers are questions philosophers have considered for centuries.

What is knowledge? What is intelligence? What is consciousness? How should an intelligent system behave?

When Philosophical Questions Become Practical

The New York Times has drawn particular attention to this development in its recent article The Revenge of the Philosophy Majors. The article presents the growing interest in philosophers within AI as part of a broader change in the kinds of expertise being sought by the technology sector.

The significance is not simply that philosophy graduates are finding unexpected employment opportunities. As AI systems become more capable, questions traditionally associated with philosophy are increasingly entering the practical work of technology.

Philosophical approaches can be useful in this setting because they encourage careful examination of concepts, assumptions, arguments, and conclusions. Questions about what constitutes knowledge, how reasoning should proceed, and what it means for a system to understand something are not merely technical questions.

They are also questions about the concepts we use to describe intelligence and the standards by which intelligent behavior should be evaluated.

Philosophers Inside AI Research

The role of philosophers in AI is not limited to discussing ethical questions after systems have been developed. Some philosophers are now working directly on the development of AI systems.

At Anthropic, philosopher Amanda Askell has worked on questions concerning AI behavior, including the development of Claude’s constitution, which sets out principles intended to guide the behavior of Anthropic’s models. The Atlantic describes the document as an extended philosophical treatment of the principles intended to guide Claude’s personality and behavior, including questions drawn from meta-ethics and epistemology.

“Writing the constitution was something that feels very much like applied philosophy.”

Amanda Askell
Philosopher and Research Scientist, Anthropic

At Google DeepMind, philosopher Iason Gabriel works on questions concerning the societal impact of AI. As AI systems become capable of acting on behalf of users, questions about what it means for an AI system to behave well become increasingly concrete. Philosophical analysis can help examine the values and assumptions that inform such judgments.

“The thing that has now become a very rich area is this question of value alignment—essentially, what it means for the technology to be actively good.”

Iason Gabriel
Ethicist and Research Scientist, Google DeepMind

Knowledge, Ethics, and Consciousness

The relationship between philosophy and AI extends across several areas of philosophical inquiry. Ethics considers how AI systems should behave and what values should guide them. Political philosophy examines how AI may promote or constrain freedom and equality. Philosophy of law considers whether the use of AI may infringe rights and who should be held responsible when it does.

Epistemology raises questions about the sufficient conditions for knowledge. Philosophy of science considers whether AI systems can discover new ideas and explanations. Logic concerns reasoning and inference. Philosophy of language asks what it means to understand and communicate.

Philosophy of mind raises perhaps the most difficult questions of all. If an artificial system behaves in ways that resemble intelligent or conscious activity, what would count as evidence that it actually has experiences? Could consciousness exist in a non-biological system?

Recent reporting in the Financial Times suggests that these questions are moving from the margins of philosophical discussion into active research within leading AI laboratories. Google DeepMind, Anthropic, and Meta have expanded work involving philosophy as they investigate machine consciousness and questions of AI welfare.

The significance of this work does not depend on any established conclusion that contemporary AI systems are conscious. Rather, it illustrates how questions traditionally associated with philosophy of mind are becoming subjects of interdisciplinary investigation.

It also raises a further ethical question: if an artificial system were eventually shown to have experiences or interests, what obligations, if any, would humans have toward it?

AI Meets Philosophy

The renewed interest in philosophy within the technology sector is therefore not simply a matter of employment. It reflects a broader intellectual development.

Artificial intelligence provides philosophy with new contexts in which longstanding questions can be reconsidered. At the same time, philosophical analysis can contribute to understanding what AI systems are, what they can do, and how they should be developed and used.

“I think the demand for philosophers with A.I. training is, if anything, outstripping the supply right now. It’s an area I encourage students to go into. I think these issues with A.I. will be front and center for a good while.”

David Chalmers
Professor of Philosophy, New York University

Chalmers’s observation captures the wider significance of this development. The relevance of philosophy to AI is not limited to the possibility of new employment opportunities. Increasingly capable artificial systems are bringing philosophical questions about knowledge, mind, reasoning, ethics, and values into new practical settings.

For students of philosophy, AI therefore represents an important contemporary field of inquiry. Questions about knowledge, mind, language, ethics, and political authority are not made obsolete by technological change. On the contrary, technological change can make these questions newly visible.

Study Philosophy at Bilkent

The questions raised by artificial intelligence are part of a much broader philosophical inquiry. At Bilkent, students study the fundamental questions concerning knowledge, reasoning, mind, ethics, language, politics, and society that continue to shape contemporary intellectual life.

AI provides one particularly vivid setting in which these questions have become newly urgent. Students interested in artificial intelligence can approach the subject not only through technology, but also through questions about knowledge and reasoning, consciousness and mind, ethics and values, freedom and equality, and the relationship between technology and society.

For students who want to understand not only how new technologies work, but also what they mean and how they should shape our future, philosophy offers a distinctive way of thinking.

Study Philosophy at Bilkent University →

Philosophy in the Age of AI Artificial intelligence is creating new contexts for some of philosophy’s oldest questions.
