The principal organizers for the event were <a href=\"https:\/\/dgarber.scholar.princeton.edu\/\">Dan Garber<\/a> (Princeton) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phil.bilkent.edu.tr\/index.php\/alireza-fatollahi\/\">Alireza Fatollahi<\/a> (Bilkent). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarekdika.com\/\">Tarek Dika<\/a> (Toronto) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.davidmarshallmiller.net\/\">David Miller<\/a> (Auburn) joined the workshop as special guests. By all accounts, the workshop was a great success, both in terms of the quality of the discussions and rapport between participants. We&#8217;re already looking forward to the next edition!<\/p><\/div><div><p>The theme for this year\u2019s discussions was the concept of \u2018method\u2019 as conceived in ancient and early modern times. A summary of the discussions that took place over the three-day event is as follows:<\/p><p>The first day began with an examination of Socratic <em>epag\u014dg\u1e17 <\/em>(induction). The discussion then turned to the nature of <em>Epist\u00eam\u00ea<\/em> (scientific knowledge) for Aristotle, as presented in his <em>Posterior Analytics<\/em>. The first day concluded with a discussion on how Aristotelian induction is supposed to work and how it might lead to a knowledge of first principles.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.phil.bilkent.edu.tr\/index.php\/princeton-bilkent-workshop-24\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8445 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.phil.bilkent.edu.tr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/DSC_5080-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.phil.bilkent.edu.tr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/DSC_5080-199x300.jpg 199w, http:\/\/www.phil.bilkent.edu.tr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/DSC_5080-678x1024.jpg 678w, http:\/\/www.phil.bilkent.edu.tr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/DSC_5080-768x1160.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.phil.bilkent.edu.tr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/DSC_5080-1017x1536.jpg 1017w, http:\/\/www.phil.bilkent.edu.tr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/DSC_5080-1356x2048.jpg 1356w, http:\/\/www.phil.bilkent.edu.tr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/DSC_5080-scaled.jpg 1696w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><\/p><p>The second day of the workshop was dedicated to Descartes&#8217;s conception of method as presented in his <em>Regulae ad directionem ingenii<\/em>. After examining Descartes&#8217;s method in the <em>Regulae<\/em>, its influence (or lack thereof) on Descartes&#8217;s later writings was traced. Dan Garber has argued that Descartes largely abandoned the method of the <em>Regulae<\/em> in his later years, while Tarek Dika, in his recent book (<em>Descartes&#8217;s Method: The Formation of the Subject of Science<\/em>), has argued that Descartes employed the method of the <em>Regulae<\/em>, broadly and properly understood, throughout his career.<\/p><p>On the third day, Newton&#8217;s method, as presented in his &#8220;Rules of Reasoning&#8221; and the &#8220;General Scholium&#8221; of the <em>Principia<\/em>, as well as in the <em>Opticks<\/em>, was examined.
