Doctoral Program

The PhD program in philosophy is designed to develop an advanced understanding of philosophical problems, especially those in contemporary analytic philosophy and the history of philosophy. It also prepares and guides students through the writing of a thesis that represents a substantial and original scholarly contribution to philosophy.

  • The PhD program entails coursework followed by a thesis. Doctoral candidates are required to publish in an internationally recognized journal before defending their thesis. The language of instruction throughout the program is English.
  • All successful applicants will receive a comprehensive scholarship: a tuition waiver (no tuition fees), discounted campus housing, private health insurance, monthly meal tickets, and a monthly stipend.
  • In addition, the department provides doctoral students with funding to present their research at international conferences.
  • Our research focuses on the central areas of analytic philosophy, especially metaphysics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, ethics, and social and political philosophy. We also have strengths in the history of philosophy, especially ancient philosophy, early modern philosophy, and nineteenth-century philosophy.
  • Applicants from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Although an undergraduate or master’s degree in philosophy is preferred, it is not a strict prerequisite for admission to the program. While there is no preparatory year, the regular coursework is designed to prepare all accepted students for advanced philosophical research.
  • We warmly welcome applications from international students.
  • Please carefully review the minimum admission requirements and FAQs before applying.
  • Enrollment in the program is limited, and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
